A bit of Irony

July 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

While travelling this summer, I’ve found that nearly every hotel leaves a copy of at least on newspaper on the floor outside each room, each morning. No big deal, right?

If it’s not a big deal, then check this out:

So, what they’re telling me with this sticker is that they’re concerned about the environment to the point that they want all of the readers to “shop green.” That’s cool – save the planet, go green. Right?

Additionally, most hotels have adopted a “just like home” policy when it comes to laundering the linens. This means that they won’t automatically change the sheets on the bed every night. They change them between guests automatically, but they’ll let you sleep with the same sheets for your entire stay unless you put a certain card face-up on the bed when you leave the room for the day.

AND, if that wasn’t enough, they won’t trade out your used towels if they’re hanging up. So you have to be a complete slob to get new towels.

Why do I have a problem with this? If they are going to go to such great lenghts to “go green,” then they need to NOT leave me a copy of the newspaper in front of my door. They don’t even give you a choice in this matter – they give you an updated copy everyday. I tried just leaving them on the floor when I left, but that just encouraged them to bring the newspaper into the room and leave it on the desk for me to “read later.” One hotel was leaving a copy of the USA Today AND the Wall Street Journal. That’s 2 papers each day for 3 days, and I didn’t even have the slightest desire to look at either one.

I just wish that people would really think about what they’re doing, especially when they are trying to make a statement difference.
