Women have more to offer, right?

August 27th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I was having a conversation with another guy tonight, who happens to be married, and I he casually implied that I would be doing something extremely manly and testosterone-driven after we were done talking. When I said that I was actually going to be doing laundry and going to bed, he said, “Dude – you need to get married!”

Hmmmm…..

Is that the only reason to get married? And, more importantly, is that the only BENEFIT to getting married? I always though that it would be for companionship, to have a family, to have a partner to help me get through life, etc. Not just to have someone to do my friggin’ laundry.

Frankly, if that is the only thing that marriage has to offer, I’m quite happy being single, thank you very much.

On the contrary, I look forward to finding a mate (read: wife), and look forward to her company, companionship, strength, help, love, laughter, and anything else she brings to the table. And, after I do the laundry, she and I will enjoy time on the couch watching football or baseball or whatever reality TV show might happen to be on.

After two months of marriage, I am pleased to report that I do the bulk of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry. I also feed the fish, water the plants, and make the bed.

But I do not complain, because Gretch is busy with school and work, whereas I just work in the evenings and spend my days trying to concoct plans to find a doctor who will write a note giving me a clean bill of health without charging for said note.

I tend to like your ideal of marriage far more than your friend’s view, which seems to hark back to the days of the wife who is barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. *sigh* Some people…

Hmmm…the first time I read “Dude – you need to get married!” I interpreted it to mean you need to get married because you need a more exciting life than doing laundry and going to bed early, but maybe I read it that way because I can’t imagine ANYONE viewing women as so subservient that their purpose in life is to do their husband’s laundry.

    Good call, G. Good call.

And perhaps your intial interpretation applies as well… sadly enough :)
