Pop-Philosophy: Would you do it?

August 28th, 2008 · 3 Comments

If you could be a member of the opposite gender for a day, would you do it?

That is pretty much how the question was originally posed to me. If that is how the question is asked, my first reaction is: “Heck No!” But, if I can put some qualifications on it, I would be inclined to say yes.

First, it would have to be one of those “Freaky Friday“-type things where I was literally a woman. Not just dessed up like one or pretending to be one. I would really have to be a woman.

Second, I would only do it if there was an ABSOLUTE guarantee that it would be reversed after precisely 24 hours. No compromise on this one.

So why would I do it? Well, I will never know what it’s like to be a woman. Ever. And I’m glad that is the case. But, at the same time, I think it would be helpful to see things (literally) from a woman’s perspective to begin to understand what it is like to be from Venus. I can’t think of any other reasons to do it though… which is why I wouldn’t do it without my previously outlined qualifications.

Now it’s your turn. Would you do it? What would your qualifications be?

Yes. Heck yes. …With exactly the same 2 provisions you outlined, of course.

In my 24 hours I would want to discover:
    1. what makes women cry at anything sentimental at the drop of the hat.
    2. what women really think when they look at other women. (hatred, jealousy, etc)
    3. what women really think when they look at men.
3.5 which emotions are stronger (looking at men vs women)
    4. why women find everything “adorable”
    5. see what it’s like to have more options than polo/tshirt and jeans/shorts to wear

After all was said and done though, I would HANDS DOWN still prefer to be a man.

Unequivocally, YES! I would love to know what it feels like to sleep until I am “ready” to get up. I would appreciate not having to undress every time I go pee. I would give anything to have a calling that doesn’t DO anything. And I certainly would enjoy the excitement of looking under the hood of a car, and knowing what I was looking at.

I am happy that I am a man. I am a man that believes there in an inherent difference between men and women. Men are inherently better at some things, women at others. This is not a judgment and I’m not advocating that one sex is better than the other. They are different, yet equal.

That said, I would absolutely be a woman for a defined period of time with a guarantee that I would switch back. I’m not sure a day, however, is long enough to experience the differences.
