Chicago’s Deep Dish Pie

September 7th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I got a phone call Saturday at about 4:15pm asking if I wanted to go out for pizza. Being a male, I couldn’t say no, but I was in for more of a treat than just pizza.

I was retrieved from my abode about 20 minutes later, and we were off – to Chicago! Okay, okay, so we didn’t actually go to Chicago itself, but to a suburb called Naperville. However Naperville is just about as far away as Chi-town (2.5-3 hours of driving each way), and I’ve been to the same pizza joint in downtown Chicago, too.

The place is called Lou Malnati’s, and it’s got to be my favorite deep-dish pizza. It’s not your average pizza – this is really a pie made from/with pizza ingredients. It is absolutely amazing. I would defintely suggest that any of you readers try to make it to Lou’s if you’re in Chicago. And, if it’s possible, I’ll come with you ;) .

Thanks go out to the Lingles for crazy ideas, crazy times, and crazy-good pie! It was a long evening, but it was absolutely worth it!

There used to be a Lou Malnati’s in Sheridan Village, but that was probably 20 years ago.

Lou has good pizza pie, but next time you are up in Chicagoland check out Giordano’s or Connie’s for deep dish pie.

I’ve been to Giordano’s a couple times, and, while it’s good pie, I would still put Lou’s on top.

    I haven’t been to Connie’s – I’ll have to make a trip :)

So, readers, you have the opportunity to try THREE good pizza places. Be sure to come to Illinois hungry!

holy cow… you drove 3 hours for a pizza?!?!?! wow. that’s customer loyalty.

I agree on the loyalty part, but here’s the kicker: we mentioned our trek to the waiter (trying to sneakily get a discount or something), who then told the manager, who then came to our table to tell us that NEXT time we could order it online and they would sent it to us – frozen, of course – so that we wouldn’t have to drive so far. It wasn’t a “Wow – Thanks for coming!” or “Hey, since you drove so far…”. Instead, “how about you NOT drive that far next time…”

But, the pizza was still amazing, so we’ll just have to go to one of Lou’s many OTHER locations next time.

Ok I still think you need to make the trek over to Iowa City to the amazing pizza joint there called Wig and Pen. Check before going though because I think it might have been damamged during the floods this spring…

Now, please tell me that at least *once* you’ve been to Papa Del’s here in Champaign… if not, then first off, Adam is fired and second off, I expect you to come here soon. Not to mention I haven’t even seen you in like, nine months!

While it has been a while since I last partook of Papa Del’s, I HAVE indeed eaten there. I would compare that to Hound Dogs, which is on the Ohio State campus. Hound Dogs might be a bit better than Papa Del’s, but only because it has that “mamma just picked the crust back up off the floor” taste to is, which is unmatchable.

If I can make some time to make a Champaign run, I’ll definitely put that on the docket!
