My Reaction

While I think that this type of post is quite cliche, I’m not going to be able to go to sleep tonight until I get it off my chest.

I haven’t made it a point to express my political views here on the blog, but I haven’t necessarily hidden them either. For those of you that may disagree, please note that these are merely my opinions and observations. I’m not claiming to be “right” nor saying that anyone else is “wrong”.

In the wake of the election, I’ve noticed that things have been a bit strange. Honestly, around the office, it seems to be quieter, more somber, and less jovial. I’m quite surprised by this, as I assumed that there would be at least SOME people that were vying for Obama to win. Thus, if they wanted him to win, I figured they would be excited when he DID win. Apparently I was wrong…

While at work on Wednesday morning, a co-worker pulled up a map of the 2008 election results:

Oh, wait. I got the two maps confused. HERE’s the real map:

Huh – that’s interesting. They have a LOT of similarities. While I’d like to believe that this election wasn’t won based on racially-motivated decisions, the results seem to show that the “South” still doesn’t like blacks. Either that, or they aren’t willing to support one as their leader.

Also hindering my vision of utopia is this audio clip. It would seem as if some people my have only voted FOR Obama because he has the same skin tone as they do. Never mind the fact that I’m more “black” than he is while still being paler than vanila ice cream. Skin tone really was a factor. That’s sad.

I want this point to be absolutely clear, as some of my intentions might not come right through:

I have nothing personal against Mr. Obama. I don’t know him, he’s never done anything that directly impacted me in a negative way, nor has he harmed anyone close to me. I have nothing against him being black. I don’t hate people with dark skin. However, I don’t agree with the principles, promises, policies and politics that Mr. Obama has touted and that he claims to represent. I also have VERY little trust for any politician, let alone US Senators.

I don’t know that the Obama presidency will really be THAT bad. However, I still have plenty of other reservations with the whole situation. Any guesses as to how quickly Slavery Reparations will be on the desk in the Oval Office? ;)

Oh, and I’m moving to Texas. They’re still “red”.

Come on down to Texas. We’ll take ya. And get there soon before they split off and become their own country. :)

  2. I got this TXT message on Wednesday morning:

ATTENTION: ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE TO REPORT TO THE COTTON FIELDS AT 5AM TOMORROW MORNING FOR ORIENTATION.

Slavery reparations are a joke, but sadly it’s a joke some people believe passionately in. The whole concept is absurd, though. It’s like making the new generation of Germans pay back the new generation of Jews. None of them were actually involved in/wronged by it, and yet they are somehow responsible?

    Doesn’t add up to me.

I think this election has to officially end the racism card in this country. No one can claim racism anymore. Period. Stop it already.

No more black/white. No reparations. No hard feelings. No leftover hatred.

Can we all just be Americans now?

Unfortunately, Adam, the race card will continue to be played for as long as we, as a society, view all people by the colour of their skin. Funny how it was a black man who famously spoke of dreaming of a day when a man would be judged by the content of his character, and yet, ironically, I think that more black people judge others based on colour than do white people! It is ridiculous how many times I have been singled out for being white. Seriously.

Now, can we have a serious discussion about poverty in America that ISN’T linked to race?

Sorry, Jacob, I think we’ve gone askew from the points of the election. I have posted a brief comment on my hopes for the Obama Presidency on mine and Gretch’s blog.
