Car Wash Procedures

January 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments

When you go to get your car washed (using one of those brushless automatic machines), do you do anything special to prepare your car for the cleansing that awaits?

Today, the temperature is (barely) warm enough to allow for a bath, and my car was has been awfully filthy for a while now, so I figured that I could get the car cleaned over my lunch.

As I approached the stall, I noted the few warning/instructional signs that were posted all around: the maximum height allowance, a reminder to roll-up my windows, a request to fold-in any side mirrors that were able to so so, and a few others. However, I didn’t see anything about pre-washing my windshield.

Apparently, though, this was something that was implied… or so it seemed. Two of the cars ahead of me in line, along with one car in the adjacent line, were aware of this critical step, and they all proceeded to wash their windshields (using the car’s windshield wipers and washer fluid) before their turn inside the actual car washing machine.

Why didn’t anyone tell me that this was something I should be doing? I mean, come on, if I’m about to take my car through a CAR WASH, which attempts to clean the ENTIRE EXTERIOR of my car, while magically avoiding the windshield, I need to be sure that I get the windshield cleaned, too. I’d really hate to drive around with a dirty windshield while the rest of my car is sparkling clean. That would just be tragic.

I’m with you, yo. If those car wash machines are supposed to be fool proof, why do they make them so darned intimidating? Honestly. (Insert emphatic sigh).

I decided to get my car washed again today and, oddly enough, NOBODY was washing their windshield before entering the car-wash bay. Now I’m totally confused about the proper way to prep for the wash….
